"Video gaming is safe
for most players and can be useful in healthcare. Games can distract kids and adults undergoing painful
treatments."
"Video games can also be
used to supplement physiotherapy or occupational therapy helping increase
the strength in players' hands."
"The attention needed to
play such a game can distract the player from the sensation of pain, a
strategy that has been reported and evaluated among paediatric patients."
"Sick children who
occupied their minds playing video or computer games required lower doses
of pain medication and tended to suffer less from hypertension and nausea
than children who were asked to just rest."
"A conference on gaming
showcased the fact that computer and video games promoted awareness in
nutrition, lifestyle choices, and medical skills. "

"Playing action video
games sharpens vision. Action video game play
changes the way our brains process visual information."
"In tests of visual
acuity that assess the ability to see objects accurately in a cluttered
space, game players scored higher than their non-playing peers."
"After just 30 hours of training, people who
normally don't play video games showed a substantial increase in the
spatial resolution of their vision, meaning they could see small, closely
packed letters more clearly."
"When people play action games, they're changing the
brain's pathway responsible for visual processing."
"These games push the human visual system to the limits
and the brain adapts to it. That learning carries over into other
activities and possibly everyday life."
"This could mean that video games will find a future
role in the medical world."
"Patients with visual impairment from conditions such as
amblyopia ( known as 'lazy-eye'), or normal aging of the brain,

Some
call it "Wiihabilitation."
Nintendo's Wii video game system, whose popularity already extends
beyond the teen gaming set, is fast becoming a craze in rehab
therapy for patients recovering from strokes, broken
bones, surgery and even combat injuries.
"It really helps the body to loosen
up so it can do what it's supposed to do," said Billy Perry, 64,
a retired Raleigh police officer.
Perry said he'd seen his grandchildren play Wii
games and was excited when a hospital therapist suggested he try it.
He
received Wii therapy at WakeMed after suffering a stroke on
Christmas Eve. He said Wii tennis and boxing helped him regain
strength and feeling in his left arm.
"It's enjoyable. I know I'm going to participate
with my grandkids more when I go visit them," Perry said.

Nintendo's Wii video game system is now gaining
popularity in hospitals and medical centers, which are using the system as
part of physical therapy programs for patients.
The system's motion-sensitive controller
requires body movements similar to traditional exercises, but officials
said the game format makes patients less focused on the movement and more
focused on winning.
Therapists said patients are entertained while
improving endurance, strength and coordination.
The therapy has been used on children as well as senior citizens. One
patient said learning how to play Wii now gives him something to do with
his grandchildren.

Social workers say the Nintendo
game that enthralls millions of teens has proved remarkably
effective in improving the lives of some seniors as well.
Unlike regular video games, the Wii requires players to swing a wand
and move their whole bodies to compete. That makes it a much more
effective physical therapy tool for seniors.
The seniors, most of whom had never
played video games before, were initially skeptical of any benefits
they could gain from the Wii.
Many of them also have cognitive
impairments or other physical and mental limitations that made them
hesitant to take part in any competitive activities.
The Wii caught on quickly.
Workers at the home said that the game's greatest impact has been a
dramatic increase in clients' physical and emotional
self-confidence.
"These clients have complex
medical issues," said Susan Holmdek-Robertshaw, program director at
the facility. "But they forget them when they play. It's amazing."

The Hines Veterans Affairs Hospital west of Chicago recently
bought a Wii system for its spinal cord injury unit.
Pfc. Matthew Turpen, 22, paralyzed from the chest down in a car
accident last year while stationed in Germany, plays Wii golf and
bowling from his wheelchair at Hines. The Des Moines, Iowa, native
says the games help beat the monotony of rehab and seem to be doing
his body good, too.
''A lot of guys don't have full finger function so it definitely
helps being able to work on using your fingers more and figuring out
different ways to use your hands'' and arms, Turpen said.
At Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the therapy is well-suited to
patients injured during combat in Iraq, who tend to be in the 19 to
25 age range, a group that's ''very into'' playing video games, said
Lt. Col. Stephanie Daugherty, Walter Reed's chief of occupational
therapy.
''They think it's for entertainment, but we know it's for therapy,''
she said.
It's useful in occupational therapy, which helps patients relearn
daily living skills including brushing teeth, combing hair and
fastening clothes, Daugherty said.
WakeMed Health has been using Wii games at its Raleigh, N.C.,
hospital for patients as young as 9 ''all the way up to people in
their 80s,'' said therapist Elizabeth Penny.
'They're getting improved endurance, strength, coordination. I
think it's very entertaining for them,'' Penny said.

Physical therapists at the Sister Kenny
Rehabilitation Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in
Minneapolis are now using the Wii to help stroke patients recover.
It's an experiment, but so far the results have
been great.
We saw 77-year-old Jerry Pope getting a workout playing a virtual
tennis game. He suffered a debilitating stroke in June. Pope said
that the Wii has enabled him to regain his balance, and the use of
his arms.
"Not only am I moving the hand, my feet are moving, I am jumping
around, it is as if I am really playing the game. It is
motivational, makes you feel like you are progressing, even if you
are not and that helps you," he said.
Before his stroke, Pope was a semi-pro tennis player. He initially
tried the traditional exercises recommended by physical therapists,
but found them repetitive and boring.
He says the Wii is fun and it is helping him make
progress. His therapists agree.
Matthew White is an occupational therapist who started working with
Pope after his stroke.
"He was still having trouble getting up, balancing and walking and
that is significantly improved as you can see. His foot work and
working on the tennis, he is doing so well ... made a remarkable
recovery in general.
"His arm movements, reaction and timing have
improved significantly," he said.
"We are using the Nintendo Wii system as a way to
practice re-learning movements we used to know how to do and we know
the brain can make changes if we can give it lots and lots of
practice."

games and weight loss are rarely seen side-by-side - unless you are
referring to Nintendo's newest games console, the Wii, which has
enticed gamers the world over to get up off the couch.
One Wii owner has reported that, in just six weeks of play, he had
dropped 2 per cent of his body fat rating, thanks to the console's
motion-sensitive control scheme that rewards active movement when
directing in-game characters.
Mickey DeLorenzo, a 25-year-old living in Philadelphia, began his "Wii
Sports Experiment" in early December last year, pledging to spend 30
minutes a day over six weeks playing Wii sports.
He would strive to keep his other activities and eating habits
constant.
On Monday when the six weeks were over, DeLorenzo updated his
website with a detailed analysis of his results.
"I lost 9lbs! [four kilograms]," he wrote, which he was impressed
with because he had not fluctuated from his original weight of 82
kilograms in two years, and made no effort to change his diet.
"Also, this experiment took place during the holiday season, where I
ate holiday dinners like I normally would and drank what I would
normally would have drank."
DeLorenzo used a digital body fat caliper, recording a drop in his
body fat rating of 2 per cent from a starting figure of 19 per cent.
His waist measurement fell from 87.6 centimetres to 78.7 centimetres.
"According to The American Council on Exercise, I went from being in
the 'acceptable' category to being in the 'fitness' category," he
said.
Being an avid gamer, DeLorenzo's secondary goal was to determine
which of the five Wii Sports games - tennis, boxing, baseball,
bowling or golf - helped to burn the most calories. He measured this
using a BioTrainer exercise monitor.
Boxing was found to be the most efficient calorie burner: "I burned
an average of 125 calories during a 15 minute period," he wrote.
Tennis was second at 92 calories per 15 minutes and bowling was
third at 77 calories. DeLorenzo said he didn't "get around to"
conducting measurements for the baseball and golf games.
DeLorenzo said that it was important to make an effort to be active
while playing the games.
"I moved my feet, I used full body motion, and I swung my arms to
mimic the real thing," he said.
"If you just stand there and make small moves or sit on the couch
and play, I don't think you'll see much if any results regarding
exercise."
He planned to continue the experiment, with the goal of trimming a
further 3 per cent from his body fat rating.

The Game Console at a
Glance
The Nintendo Wii (pronounced
'we') is the fifth home video game console released by Nintendo. A
distinguishing feature of the console is the Wii remote, which can
be used as a pointing device.
It is a revolutionary device that offers
interactivity and excitement on a whole new level.
This remote is a wireless motion sensor that allow the users to actually feel like they are
physically in the game while they are playing their video games.
The video game allows you to grip this motion-sensing wireless
controller, and swing your arms as if you were playing tennis or bowling
or boxing. It gets your whole body moving, but in a controlled setting.
This game console responds well to human
movements, rather than using the buttons. The Nintendo Wii is
suitable for people of ALL ages, from children to senior citizens.

Free Tips!
Video game addiction is becoming a common trend among children as well
as adults.
According to some studies, it would appear that the excitement of video
games causes the brain to release a chemical that is addictive. If you don't want your kid to be hooked on video
games, follow these simple rules:
Create
your own incentive system. For example, tell your kid to finish his or her
schoolwork first, and then they can play the video games.
Give reward or
gift if he or she performs well in exams.
Take a break.
After about an hour playing the video games, ask them what are his or
her opinion on something. This is to distract him or her from thinking
about playing the video games again.
Limit the playing
time. Tell them how long they can play the video games. An
hour is considered long enough.
It is important that video and computer games are played in moderation.
Parents should provide a selection of activities, not just the ones that
have the most action or are addictive. Choose some that involve problem
solving or good story lines. Also aim for a balance in your child's life.
Sports are important, reading's important.
